How to change your university account’s password (UO)

The password of the university student and staff user account as well as of a temporary UFO user account must be changed at least once a year. You get the reminder to your e-mail if you have not changed your password during the year. When you are planning a new password, check out the instruction: Requirements for a good password.

In this instruction, several ways are given how to change or set your password. Choose the one that best suits your situation.

Way 1: Change on Windows workstation of the university in campus network or in VPN connection

NOTE! This is the most convenient and recommended method for those who have a university computer in use. When working remotely, a VPN connection must be on.

  1. Log in the workstation (student or univ domain).
  2. If you are working remotely, start the VPN connection: FortiClient or OpenVPN.
  3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  4. Choose “Change a password / Muuta Salasana”.
  5. First enter your current password and then type the new password twice in the fields reserved for them.
    • Note: Special characters in passwords may cause problems when logging into services that use HAKA login. If your password does not work, for example, in Exam, but you are able to log in to your email with it, the only solution is to change the password again.
  6. Press Enter or approval button.

Way 2: Change in password service

  1. Go to the university password service https://account.oulu.fi/change/passwd.
  2. Give your user account in the short form.
  3. Type your current password.
  4. Type the new password.
    • Note: Special characters in passwords may cause problems when logging into services that use HAKA login. If your password does not work, for example, in Exam, but you are able to log in to your email with it, the only solution is to change the password again.
  5. Confirm the new password.
  6. Press the button “Vaihda salasana / Change password”.

Way 3: Change in M365 service

  1. Go to the M365 service sign-in page https://o365.oulu.fi/.
  2. Sign-in with your MS account which is for students in form account@student.oulu.fi and for the staff account@univ.yo.oulu.fi (please note that the word account will be replaced by your user account) and type your current password.
  3. In M365 service, tap your profile picture/initials and tap “My account / Näytä tili” and then “Change password / Vaihda salasana”.
  4. First enter your current password and then type the new password twice in the fields reserved for them.
    • Note: Special characters in passwords may cause problems when logging into services that use HAKA login. If your password does not work, for example, in Exam, but you are able to log in to your email with it, the only solution is to change the password again.
  5. Press the button “Submit / Lähetä”.

Way 4: Set in password service

NOTE: If you do not remember or know your password or username, you will identify yourself to the password service through the Suomi.fi e-Identification service (identification with Finnish online banking codes, mobile certificate, ID card or organisation card).

  1. Go to the university password service https://account.oulu.fi/suomifi/passwd.
  2. Choose the method which you use in Suomi.fi e-Identification service and proceed accordinglyi.
  3. After successful identification, you will access the password service.
  4. Type the new password.
    • Note: Special characters in passwords may cause problems when logging into services that use HAKA login. If your password does not work, for example, in Exam, but you are able to log in to your email with it, the only solution is to change the password again.
  5. Confirm the new password.
  6. Press the button “Vaihda salasana / Change password”.

Way 5: Reset the password and set a new one in sign-in screen

NOTE: This feature is currently only used by the test group!

NOTE: This self-service reset is possible only when your MFA verification method is Authenticator application in phone. See how to change the verification method in your MS account.

  1. To start reset your password, use a web browser to go to the university’s Azure login screen, for example https://o365.oulu.fi/. Do not try to sign-in. (However, if you or someone else is logged in on this device to the univ or student domain on campus network or VPN, you can access Azure sign-in screen only in the Incognito/In Private window of the browser.)
  2. Select the option “Can’t access your account? / Etkö pysty käyttämään tiliäsi?”.
  3. To reset your account, enter your M365 account username in the form account@student.oulu.fi, or account@univ.yo.oulu.fi if you are a staff member.
  4. Enter the characters you see in the picture (you may listen).
  5. Press “Next / Seuraava”.
  6. In verification step, pick up the verification code from your account in Authenticator app in your phone and type it in the field ”Enter your verification code / Anna vahvistuskoodisi”.
  7. Press ”Next / Seuraava”.
  8. After successful verification, you can set a new password and verify it by typing your password in the fields reserved for them.
    • Note: Special characters in passwords may cause problems when logging into services that use HAKA login. If your password does not work, for example, in Exam, but you are able to log in to your email with it, the only solution is to change the password again.
  9. Press then “Finish / Valmis”.
  10. You will receive an email notification from Microsoft that you changed the password.

NOTE: Once you have changed your password, you should wait a few minutes to log in to other services. Remember to update all your devices (phones, tablets, and computers) to use your new password!
