Using your work phone and plan abroad

Keywords: , , , ,

Before traveling, check what kind of plan your mobile device has; whether it is possible to use the phone or mobile broadband abroad and what the costs will be. You can inquire about this from ICT services (mobiilituki@oulu.fi).

Depending on your destination and the duration of your trip, you might consider getting a temporary plan, such as Reissunetti.

Check your plan

Phone:

  • If your phone has a domestic plan, you cannot make calls or use data abroad. However, you can connect your phone to a wireless network to use the internet, but only connect to secure networks.
  • If your phone has a domestic + international plan, you can make calls and use data abroad in EU and EEA countries, with a limit of 7 GB/month.

Other mobile devices (laptop, tablet):

  • If your mobile device has a domestic plan, you cannot use data abroad. However, you can connect the device to a wireless network to use the internet, but only connect to secure networks.
  • If your device has a domestic + international plan, you can use data in EU and EEA countries, with a limit of 7 GB/month.

A domestic plan can be upgraded to include an international plan. Any changes require unit approval.
You can send status checks and change requests to the service address mobiilituki@oulu.fi.

Mobile data when abroad

The organization’s international subscriptions have unlimited data access.

  • Within the EU, the monthly fee includes 7 GB of data per month. Note: This will change when the new Hansel voice solutions agreement comes into effect!
  • Outside the EU, data traffic is charged according to the local operator’s pricing. For usage abroad, refer to the Käyttö ulkomailla – Roaming-hinnasto – Elisa (in Finnish).
  • Especially outside the EU and in countries with expensive pricing, it is advisable to use the Reissunetti service (in Finnish).
  • Often, a local operator’s prepaid subscription is a more affordable way to transfer mobile data.
  • The organization’s international mobile subscriptions are equipped with the so-called Roaming Data Guard. The free Roaming Data Guard add-on sets a balance limit of 50 euros (excluding VAT).
    • Once the balance limit is reached, data transfer abroad is blocked. Users receive text message reminders when 80% and 100% of the balance is used.
    • Before traveling abroad, it is good to ensure the activation of Roaming Data Guard by contacting the service address: mobiilituki@oulu.fi.
    • A subscription without the Roaming Data Guard service can incur significant data transfer costs abroad without the user’s knowledge.
