Using your work phone and plan abroad

Keywords: , , , ,

Before traveling, check what kind of plan your mobile device has; whether it is possible to use the phone or mobile broadband abroad and what the costs will be. You can inquire about this from ICT services (mobiilituki@oulu.fi).

When traveling outside the EU/EEA area, a so-called Travel Data Package is automatically activated for your mobile subscription.
With the Travel Data Package, you can transfer mobile data at a rate of 1 GB for 10.50€/GB. The package is automatically activated either when the previous package has been fully used or after 14 days have passed. The price of the package remains the same as the original.

The Travel Data Package works in the following countries:
Albania, Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, South Africa, South Korea, Faroe Islands, Georgia, Greenland, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Israel, Japan, Canada, Cape Verde, China, Colombia, Kuwait, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Montenegro, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay, New Zealand, Belarus, Russia, Vietnam, United States.

In countries where the Travel Data Package does not work, it is recommended to use services such as Elisa Reissunetti.

In the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man, data transfer costs 3€/GB.

Depending on your destination and the duration of your trip, you may also consider purchasing a temporary prepaid subscription.

NOTE! To avoid recurring and excessive mobile data charges outside the EU/EEA area, data roaming on the phone should be enabled only when there is a genuine need to use mobile data. The phone user is responsible for the proper use of data roaming. The data roaming setting is usually found in the phone’s settings under Mobile Networks (Android) or Cellular Data Options (iPhone).

Check your plan

Phone:

  • If your phone has a domestic plan, you cannot make calls or use data abroad. However, you can connect your phone to a wireless network to use the internet, but only connect to secure networks.
  • If your phone has a domestic + international plan, you can make calls and use data abroad in EU countries with a limit of 10 GB/month, for the portion exceeding this, a fee of 1.30€/GB will be charged.

Other mobile devices (laptop, tablet):

  • If your mobile device has a domestic plan, you cannot use data abroad. However, you can connect the device to a wireless network to use the internet, but only connect to secure networks.
  • If your device has a domestic + international plan, you can use data in EU countries with a limit of 10 GB/month, for the portion exceeding this, a fee of 1.30€/GB will be charged.

A domestic plan can be upgraded to include an international plan. Any changes require unit approval.
You can send status checks and change requests to the service address mobiilituki@oulu.fi.

Mobile data when abroad

The organization’s international subscriptions have unlimited data access.

  • Within the EU, the monthly fee includes 10 GB of data per month, for the portion exceeding this, a fee of 1.30€/GB will be charged.
  • Outside the EU, data traffic is charged according to the local operator’s pricing. For usage abroad, refer to the Käyttö ulkomailla – Roaming-hinnasto – Elisa (in Finnish).
  • Especially outside the EU and EEA countries where the Travel Data Package does not work, it is advisable to use the Elisa Reissunetti service (in Finnish).
  • Often, a local operator’s prepaid subscription is a more affordable way to transfer mobile data.
  • The organization’s international mobile subscriptions are equipped with the so-called Roaming Data Guard. The free Roaming Data Guard add-on sets a balance limit of 50 euros (excluding VAT).
    • Once the balance limit is reached, data transfer abroad is blocked. Users receive text message reminders when 80% and 100% of the balance is used.
    • Before traveling abroad, it is good to ensure the activation of Roaming Data Guard by contacting the service address: mobiilituki@oulu.fi.
    • A subscription without the Roaming Data Guard service can incur significant data transfer costs abroad without the user’s knowledge.
