Zoom (NORDUNET) accessibility statement

Keywords: ,

This accessibility statement is based on Zoom’s own accessibility assessment, CSC’s assessment, and the University of Oulu’s own assessment. This statement was published on August 9, 2023, and reviewed on January 2, 2025.

Please note that the Zoom used by Finnish higher education institutions is not the same as the general Zoom, and it does not have all the same features available.

Zoom supports key commands that make it easier to use Zoom. Check out the key commands available to you: select Profile, Settings, and Keyboard shortcuts.

The service largely meets the accessibility requirements.

The accessibility problems detected in the service are grouped into the following categories:

  1. Understandability
  2. Usage without vision or with limited vision
  3. Usage with keyboard only
  4. Usage without hearing or with limited hearing
  5. Real-time text (RTT)

Understandability

  • A few features and dialogs are by design timing restricted (WCAG 2.2.1)
  • Some input fields by design do not use error messages and error suggestions:
    • Zoom provides visual error messages that are also programmatically announced to Screen Readers (e.g. an invalid meeting ID or invalid meeting password). In some other cases, the product does not use form fields with automatic error detection and error messages. Instead, buttons to proceed are disabled until the user provides a valid input (e.g. incomplete meeting ID). (WCAG 3.3.3)
  • In the Profile settings, buttons automatically redirect users to external websites without informing users. (WCAG 3.2.3, 3.2.5)

Usage without vision or with limited vision

The majority of the features and content in the product is keyboard and screen reader accessible. There are no contrast issues in the user interface. However, the presenters are responsible of the accessibility of the content they share, including contrasts.

Alternate pre-recorded audio descriptions are not supported:

Meeting participants may share video content with audio descriptions included into the main audio track. However, Zoom does not provide the ability for participants to select a separate audio track while viewing shared video content. The product does not provide a way to include alternate audio descriptions tracks into meeting recordings. (WCAG 1.2.5)

For screen reader users

  • The product includes some instances where the accessible name differs from the visible text label. Some programmatic labels have been slightly tweaked to increase understandability for screen reader users. (WCAG 2.5.3)
(WCAG 3.3.1)
  • A table is used to display keyboard shortcuts. While the column headers are not programmatically determined, the table only
has 3 columns (Shortcut description, shortcut keystroke, global shortcut checkbox), and each cell provides contextual information to
understand the table. (EN 301 549: 11.3.2.6 Row, column, and headers)
  • Please refer to the next chapter for issues related to using the keyboard only.

There are a few instances where elements are not accessible with keyboard only

  • In large Gallery Views when there are multiple pages of participants, users can click on the next and previous buttons to scroll through the pages. These controls do not receive keyboard focus, but instead can be activated using the Page Up / Page Down keystroke. (WCAG 2.1.1)
  • Gallery View thumbnail re-ordering is not keyboard accessible. Zoom is actively researching and working on making the thumbnail re-ordering feature keyboard accessible. (WCAG 2.1.1)
  • Drag-and-drop to re-order the Main Navigation Tabs and the Chat Compose Shortcuts List is not keyboard accessible. Zoom is working on providing keyboard accessibility to this feature. (WCAG 2.1.1)
  • Dragging-and-dropping to reorder buttons in the meeting toolbar is not yet keyboard accessible. Zoom is working on building support for this via keyboard shortcut. (WCAG 2.1.1)
  • Text in the chat history list is selectable via keyboard. However, users are not afforded the ability of granular selection of text. (EN 301 549: 11.3.2.14 Modification of focus and selection attributes)

Usage without hearing or with limited hearing

Zoom supports closed captioning for its meetings. Meeting hosts can use automated captioning or assign a dedicated participant to type closed captioning.

  • The product provides a dedicated set of accessibility settings that include changing caption font size, and keyboard shortcuts. The product does not yet support customizations of UI color and size. (EN 301 549: 11.4 User preferences )
  • Meeting participants may share video content with audio descriptions included into the main audio track. However, Zoom does not provide the ability for participants to select a separate audio track while viewing shared video content.
The product does not provide a way to include alternate audio descriptions tracks into meeting recordings. (WCAG 1.2.5)

ICT with two-way voice communication
(Real-time text (RTT) functionality)

  • TTY adapter can be used with a Zoom Appliance Phone to transmit TTY signals.
  • Zoom Phone platform does not support transmitting RTT signals.
