Secure Shell (SSH) is a cryptographic network protocol for secure data communication, remote command-line login, remote command execution, and other secure network services between two networked computers that connects, via a secure channel over an insecure network, a server and a client (running SSH server and SSH client programs, respectively).
SSH client can perform
- A secure terminal connection to the UNIX-based computer
- Your user account password change on Paju- and Koivu-server
- File transfer between workstation or home computer and UNIX server.
SSH connection to UNIX computer
You can use Windows Terminal program to open a SSH connection to UNIX-computer from Windows (NB. previously we used Putty). Windows Terminal is available on all Windows computers maintained by ICT Services.
From Mac or Linux you can take a SSH connection to UNIX-computer using Terminal-program.
In console window you can operate in UNIX operating system using commands. Practical commands are for example:
- mkdir (make directory)
- cd (change direcroty)
- chmod (setting rights for files
- ls (list of files and attributes)
- passwd (change password)
- logout (logging out)
SFTP file transfer
WinSCP program allows secure file transfer between computers as WinSCP uses SSH protocol to transfer files. WinSCP program has been installed into all Windows computers maintained by IT Administration.
Other operating systems have their own SSH access programs. Mac OS X can use FileZilla, Cyberduck and Fugu programs. Linux have a gFTP and FileZilla programs.
