ICT Services recommend a separate travel laptop and mobile phone for trips abroad. If your trip abroad lasts more than 2 months, please contact ICT services, in which case we will agree on a case-by-case basis on the use of the laptop and phone.
For business trips abroad, the unit can rent a laptop computer for its employees, (starting from 34,80 € / each month) which is safe to use even in the destination country.
The package can include, a mobile phone abroad with a subscription, the operating costs of which are allocated to the subscriber’s cost pool. A mobile phone abroad can be ordered separately and is recommended to be rented at least when traveling to high-risk areas, i.e. when the trip is outside the EU and EEA countries.
For security reasons, the travel laptop has only a limited number of applications (defined below). Applications on the travel laptop must be used through a browser or remote servers. If you need science-specific or other applications that cannot be used through remote servers, it is possible to use your own device. However, when traveling to a high-risk area, you must bring your own computer to ICT services for re-installation immediately after the trip. You can check the travel bulletins of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs about your destination country in Finnish: Matkustustiedotteet – Ulkoministeriö.

- Use primarily a data connection of the travel mobile phone and a VPN connection of the travel laptop for telecommunications.
- Note the data costs of the target country! Get a local subscription if needed.
- Take along only the kind of information and equipment you need on your trip.
- In principle, do not take along any material that, if in the wrong hands, could cause harm to yourself or your organization.
- Keep in mind that in your destination country you are under the jurisdiction of local authorities and in certain countries authorities have the right to check the contents of computers and other devices.
- Do not leave the devices unattended.
- Activate the access code for the devices and adjust the delay to be as short as possible.
- However, if you take your actual work or your own private laptop on the trip, make a backup of your devices before the trip. During the trip, use only a university-approved VPN service. Be prepared to empty the device after the trip and restore the status of the backup made before departure.
