Restrictions on the work use of devices that are not centrally managed by ICT services

Due to advances in artificial intelligence and more efficient data mining, the digital operating environment has changed rapidly. The risk that potentially leaked data may be misused has increased significantly. In addition, the exploitation of critical security vulnerabilities has accelerated. For this reason, the University of Oulu will restrict the use of its digital services on devices that are not centrally managed.

At this stage, the restrictions apply to the staff in ICT Services and Premises and Security Services. Our goal is to improve the security of the university’s ICT environment to better respond to the challenges of an evolving cyber threat landscape.

  1. Why is this change being made?
    • This change improves security and protects the university’s data. Devices not managed by ICT services do not meet security requirements, which may expose data to risks. Devices managed by ICT are protected centrally, and receive automatic updates.
  2. What happens to the university’s M365 Office package on my home computer?
    • In the service units, the use of the M365 Office suite on home computers will end. In the future, Office will only be available on centrally managed devices or via the Azure Virtual Desktop service.
  3. How can I access my email if my work devices are at the workplace?
    • Remote access is available via Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). AVD is Microsoft’s cloud-based remote desktop solution that allows users to securely access applications and files from any device via the internet.
