VPN Portal (UO)

NOTE! The current VPN Portal sa.oulu.fi will not be available after January 2023, when the Pulse Secure services will be discontinued!

  • To continue using a secure VPN connection, install a VPN Client OpenVPN Connect or FortiClient on your computer.
  • The sa.oulu.fi portal will be replaced by the vpn.oulu.fi portal, which offers services Terveysportti and Oppiportti. In addition, the university staff can access Lippu remote desktop via the portal.

THE NEW SERVICE (vpn.oulu.fi):

If you do not have a VPN client on your device, you will get a secure connection to the university network from outside it through VPN Portal. The VPN connection is easily obtained by the web browser, but there are very limited functionality in comparison with the use of the client. At this stage, the VPN portal offers services Terveysportti and Oppiportti. In addition to these, the university staff can access Lippu remote desktop through the VPN portal.

  • Sign in the VPN portal with your MS account (account@univ.yo.oulu.fi or account@student.oulu.fi).
  • Sign in Lippu (Lippu Remote Desktop) with the staff account which can be entered in its short or long form.

THE ENDING SERVICE (sa.oulu.fi):

If you do not have a VPN client on your device, you will get a secure connection to the university network from outside it via this VPN Portal at the latest in January 2023. In this case, the VPN connection is obtained through the window of the web browser, but there are very limited functionality in comparison with the use of the client. The use of university systems and remote desktops is possible through the portal using strong identification, but limited nonetheless.

  • Sign in the VPN Portal with your user account and password.
  • Choose light or strong authentication method. For the strong authentication you need a passcode, so getting it requires advance measures from you.
  • NOTE! This service is ending in January 2023, use OpenVPN Connect or FortiClient instead.

Light authentication in VPN Portal

The instruction applies to these options: Login as: Student (Password) and Login as: Staff (Password)

  • Light authentication in VPN means logging in with a user account and password.
  • It is possible only in VPN Portal (VPN clients use always strong authentication).
  • In this case, a network directory K is in use and some web services only.
  • For example, remote desktops are not available, and neither are the staff tool Certia portal, as they require a strong authentication.

Strong SMS authentication with VPN

The instruction applies to these options in VPN Portal: Login as: Student (SMS) and Login as: Staff (SMS). In addition, SMS authentication may be possible in exceptional cases with the staff UNIV VPN/Pulse Secure client.

  • For a strong authentication with VPN, you need a disposable passcode in addition to your user account and password.
  • In SMS authentication you receive a passcode as a text message.
  • Use requires you to have saved your mobile number on the service https://account.oulu.fi/vpn. You are identified through  Suomi.fi e-Identification service.
  • Only the numbers of domestic operators can be used.

Strong OTP authentication for staff with VPN

The instruction applies to this option in VPN Portal: Login as: Staff (OTP).In addition, OTP authentication may be possible in exceptional cases with the staff UNIV VPN/Pulse Secure client.

  • For a strong authentication with VPN, you need a disposable passcode in addition to your user account and password.
  • In OTP authentication you pick up a passcode from an application installed in your phone.
  • Use requires you have installed Microsoft Authenticator app into the phone and in addition to that, have activated the app in the service https://account.oulu.fi/otp. You are identified through  Suomi.fi e-Identification service.
  • The phone must have a data connection.

Use of VPN Portal

  • Editing files is possible so that you first download the file from the K drive to your computer and send the edited or new files back to the university K drive.
  • Through the portal, you can go to web services either by entering the web address or using bookmarks already stored on the portal. You can also add personal bookmarks.
