Virtual Servers for Research and Teaching Use

Keywords: , ,

The University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences provide access to the following virtualization solutions through which virtual servers can be acquired:

  1. CSC’s cPouta – A public cloud service that provides virtual machines free of charge.
  2. CSC’s ePouta – A public cloud service suitable for processing sensitive data. System administration is handled by the University of Oulu IT Services.
  3. University of Oulu virtualization platform – An internal service that enables running production-level workloads.

CSC’s cPouta Service

CSC’s cPouta service is the best starting point when virtual servers are needed for research or teaching, and there is no need for backups or support from IT Services. The research group is fully responsible for maintaining the virtual machines and ensuring their information security.

CSC’s terms and conditions for the service must be observed.

CSC’s ePouta Service

CSC’s ePouta service functions similarly to cPouta, but virtual machines are created by IT Services, and access is limited to the university’s internal network.

CSC’s terms and conditions for the service must be observed.

A virtual server can be ordered by sending a service request to ict@oulu.fi, including:

  1. Server administrators (2 persons) and their SSH keys
  2. Desired server name
  3. Desired server configuration (“Flavor” found in ePouta documentation)
  4. Required disk space
  5. Required firewall openings to the internal network
  6. Server operating system (either from ePouta documentation or from IT Services’ price list—commercial Linux distributions + Windows Server OS)
  7. When is the server needed?
  8. When will the need for the server end?
  9. Cost center

University of Oulu Virtualization Platform

The University of Oulu virtualization platform is a good option if you need to ensure continuous availability and regular backups. The platform is duplicated across two data centers, and backups are stored in a third.

The price list for virtual servers can be found in Patio: Virtuaalipalvelimet | Patio. Costs are charged to the cost center once per year.
