Version control systems at the University of Oulu

Keywords: , , ,

The University of Oulu offers a version management service at version.oulu.fi, which can be used by both students and staff of the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The service is based on the Gitlab Community Edition and runs as a Git version management system.

The use of the service is free of charge, but if you save very large project folders (repositories), a fee may be charged depending on the storage space. Up-to-date price list can be found in Patio (in Finnish): link to price list.

How to use version.oulu.fi

  • Log in at version.oulu.fi using the EntraID of UO or Oamk (e.g. username@univ.yo.oulu.fi).
  • Signing in requires a VPN connection to the UO or Oamk.
  • If you want to do a public project, it is recommended to use GitHub or public Gitlab.

Note:

  • Repositories are reviewed annually. If the owner’s username is locked and he no longer has an active UO or Oamk username, the repository will be removed.
  • The same goes for groups that do not have any active members.

Additional Features

  • Gitlab runners are available in the service, which can be used to automate, for example, the translation of code.
  • If the current runners are not enough for your needs, you can contact ICT Services let’s see together if they can be modified.
  • Gitlab also has access to artifact and container repositories.

Use of GitHub

  • GitHub is not available to Oamk users.
  • Teachers and research groups can request access to the UO’s GitHub organization by sending an email to ict@oulu.fi.
  • This introduces organizational and enterprise-level capabilities.
  • Research groups can also purchase GitHub Copilot licenses, which are attached to the UO organisation, for an additional fee.

For students:

  • Students can apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack, which provides many useful tools for study use. Further information: GitHub Education
